Social Skills
Social skills are an important foundation for developing later interpersonal relationships. Like any skill, young children develop these abilities in small steps over time. At North Shore Speech Therapy we assess your child’s social skills and give advice on how to further encourage the development of these areas.
Social skills for young children include:
• Eye contact
• Joint attention (child and adult/peer both looking at something together)
• Turn-taking (taking turns in games and then in conversations)
• Listening
• Following routines
• Understanding feelings
• Sharing
Difficulties in other areas of communication, such as language or speech, may also impact on a child’s development of important social skills.
