School Readiness Groups at our Chatswood Clinic in January
Ideal for kids starting ‘big school’ in 2025
We all want our children to thrive as they transition to primary school. Children who are ‘ready’ to start school have better outcomes during this first crucial year, setting the stage for future academic success. But ‘school readiness’ is not just about what your child knows. Research shows that social and emotional development and being ‘ready to learn’ are the most important factors in a positive start to school.
So how can a speech pathologist help with ‘school readiness’?
Strong speech and language skills are vital for children to express themselves, follow instructions, and engage with classmates. Strong language skills are also proven to be an essential foundation for literacy skills to develop during the first years of formal schooling.
🍎 Here are some speech and language skills to build in your school starter:
- Following instructions – classroom instructions often include up to 3 steps along with a range of concepts like if, then, first, next, last, before, after (e.g. Before you sit on the floor for lunch, get your hat our of your bag, if it isn’t already on your table).
- Understanding a range of questions – classroom discussions often include questions that require children to reason, predict and problem solve (e.g. Why do you think the Hungry Caterpillar felt sick?; What would happen if he didn’t eat all that food? )
- Being able to clearly express themselves – using long sentences and specific words. This can include activities like being able to tell news, explaining how to complete a simple task or joining in conversations with friends.
- Early literacy skills – knowing the sounds that some letters make; being able to hear the different sounds in simple words (e.g. ‘fish’ starts with an ‘fffff’ sound)
- Social interaction skills – working in a group, letting others take a turn, asking for a turn, letting others know when you don’t like something .
And remember – by the time that they start school (around 5 years old) children should be able to say all their speech sounds correctly, except for the ‘th’ sounds.
