ADHD Awareness Month runs throughout October, and this year’s theme, “The Many Faces of ADHD”, highlights the diversity of experiences among people living with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
At North Shore Speech Therapy, we’re proud to support this global initiative that aims to break down stigma, promote understanding, and empower individuals with ADHD to thrive.
1 in 20 Australians have ADHD, yet myths and misconceptions still persist. This month is a chance to challenge outdated views and celebrate the strengths and individuality of those with ADHD—across all ages, backgrounds, and walks of life.
ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition that can cause difficulties with attention, impulse control, and activity levels. It exists on a spectrum and presents in three main types:
ADHD is often misunderstood as a behavioural issue or something children “grow out of.” In reality, ADHD can affect people throughout their lives, and many adults remain undiagnosed or misdiagnosed.
ADHD Awareness Month is about education and empathy. Harmful stereotypes – like the belief that ADHD only affects young boys—can prevent people from seeking help or receiving appropriate support.
This year’s theme, “The Many Faces of ADHD”, encourages us to recognise that ADHD looks different for everyone. It’s not just about distraction or hyperactivity – it’s about how individuals experience the world, learn, and connect. It is also identifying the limitations, barriers and stigma that is prevalent in society.
By raising awareness, we can:
At North Shore Speech Therapy, we work with children and families to support ADHD through tailored intervention, collaboration with schools, and practical strategies for everyday life. We are passionate about neuro-affirming care and the importance of listening to lived experiences and supporting our clients to be their authentic selves.
ADHD Awareness Month is a time to listen, learn, and lead with compassion. By embracing the many faces of ADHD, we can build a more inclusive and supportive community for all.
Let’s move beyond the stereotypes – and celebrate every mind!
