12 Months Old

Understanding: Does your child

Understand about 10 words*
Respond to their name by looking or turning*
Recognise greetings and gestures, such as ‘hi’ and ‘bye-bye’*
Use sounds and gestures, and say at least one word*

Speaking: Does your child

Babble frequently*
Copy different sounds and noises*

Eating and Drinking: Does your child

Feed themselves some finger foods (e.g. toast, cheese sticks, small pieces of banana) wihtout coughing or gagging*
Eat many of the same foods as the rest of the family (cooked and cut into small pieces)*
Drink from an open cup with help to hold and tip it and from a straw cup by themselves*

18 Months Old

Understanding: Does your child

Understand up to 50 words and some short phrases*
Follow simple instructions (eg ‘throw the ball’)*
Point to familiar objects or pictures when named*
Follow familiar 2 step instructions (e.g. Get the cup and give it to me)*

Speaking: Does your child

Say 20 single words spontaneously - some words may still be unclear*
Copy lots of words and noises*
Name a few body parts*
Use objects in pretend play (eg hold toy phone to their ear and say ‘hello’)*

Eating and Drinking: Does your child

Eat most of the same foods as the rest of the family (cooked and cut into small pieces)*
Eat without needing lots of distraction*
Use their fingers to feed themself and to explore food (it might be very messy!)*
Drink from and open cup with help and from a straw cup by themselves*

2 Years Old

Understanding: Does your child

Follow more complex two part instructions (e.g. get the teddy and give him a drink.’)*
Respond to simple wh-questions (e.g. ‘what's that’ and ‘where's teddy?’)*
Point to several body parts and pictures in books when named*
Understand location words like 'in' and 'on'*

Speaking: Does your child

Say at least 60 single words (some words might still be unclear)*
Speak clearly enough so that other people can understand them about half the timet least 60 single words (some words might still be unclear)*
Put two words together (eg ‘Mummy go’, ‘no ball’)*
Use most vowel sounds and a variety of consonants (m, n, p, b, h, w, t, d)*

Play and social skills: Does your child

Use pretend play with some toys (e.g. kiss a teddy and put him to bed)*
Play near others and let them join in with play*

Eating and Drinking: Does your child

Eat most of the same food as the rest of the family including meats without coughing or gagging*
Drink from an open cup with some help*
Feed themselves*

3 Years Old

Understanding: Does your child

Follow more complex two part instructions e.g. get the teddy and give him a drink*
Understand simple wh-questions, such as what, where and who*
Understand the concepts of same and different*
Sort items into groups (e.g. food, clothes, transport)*
Recognise some basic colours*

Speaking: Does your child

Speak without stuttering*
Say four to five words in a sentence eg My dolly likes eating porridge*
Use a variety of words for names, actions, locations and descriptions*
Ask questions using what, where and who*
Have a vocabulary of at least 500 words*
Use a range of sounds including p, b, m, t, d, n, k, g plus all vowels*
Speak clearly enough for other people to understand them about 75% of the time*

Social: Does your child

Join in conversations, but may not take turns or stay on topic*
Readily play with other children their age*

Eating and Drinking: Does your child

Eat all the same foods as the rest of the family without coughing or gagging*
Drink from an open cup without help*
Feed themselves*
Try out new foods*

4 Years Old

Language and pre-literacy: Does your child

Retell past events in a simple way (e.g. what happened at preschool)*
Use all pronouns including his, hers, himself and herself*
Use sentences that are at least 5 words long*
Join sentences using words like "and" and "because"*
Listen to a story and answer questions about what they have heard?*
Understand a range of concepts such as size (big, little, long, short), location (in, on, under, behind, next to) and quantity (all, none)*
Recognise their name and hold a book the right way?*

Speech: Does your child

Say the following sounds when talking? ( h, w, ng, m, n, p, k, t, g, d, b, y, f, l, sh, ch, j, s, z)*
Say longer words with lots of syllables eg spaghetti bolognaise, hospital*
Speak clearly enough to be easily understood by unfamiliar people all the time*

Social: Does your child

Start, end and stay in conversations without help*

5 Years Old

Language: Does your child

Follow three part instructions (e.g., put on your shoes, get your backpack and line up outside)*
Understand time related words (e.g., ‘before’, ‘after’, ‘last’)*
Use long sentences that sound correct and make sense*
Talk clearly about things that have happened or that they are going to do*
Understand most instructions without repetition or help*
Recognise some letters, sounds, and familiar signs around them*

Speech: Does your child

Speak without stuttering?*
Use all speech sounds correctly except 'th'*
Speak clearly enough to be easily understood by other people all the time*

Social: Does your child

Easily interact with a range of people including adults and children*

6 Years Old

Language: Does your child

Answer more abstract questions like "what might happen next?" "how does he feel?" Why does he feel like that?"*
Describe how words are related eg opposites, synonymns, words from the same category (eg animals).*
Understand and retell long stories, withe events in the correct order?*
Say all sounds correctly except 'th'*
Speak without stuttering*
Have a wide vocabulary and use the correct specific words (not 'thing, stuff, you know...')*

Literacy: Does your child

Read lots of letters/sounds?*
Tell you the first or last sound in words*
Read and write 3 sound words eg "cat, pot"*
Recognise lots of familiar words e.g. Mum, Dad, school, the*

Social: Does your child

Easily interact with a range of people including adults and children*

7 Years Old

Speech and Language: Does your child

Use correct grammar when talking*
Use complex conjunctions like 'but', 'before', 'after'?*
Have a wide vocabulary and use the correct specific words (not 'thing, stuff, you know...')*
Talk about past and future events and easily have conversations?*
Listen to long stories and then retell the story in the correct order?*
Easily maintain social interactions with others their age?*
Speak without stuttering?*
Use all sounds correctly (including 'th') and be easily understood all of the time*

Literacy: Does your child

Read all letter-sounds quickly and correctly?*
Spell lots of familiar words correctly and sound out new words*
Read simple books and sound out new words when reading*
Understand short books that they read*

8 Years Old

Speech and Language: Does your child

Use past irregular tense (went, flew), irregular plurals (mice, children) and future tense (will go)?*
Use conjunctions like 'if' 'that', 'unless'?*
Understand and explain word relationships (synonyms, antonyms, categories)?*
Tell stories with a clear introduction, problem and conclusion?*
Understand and retell long stories that are easy to follow*
Say all sounds clearly and be understood all of the time*
Easily maintain social interactions with others their age and readily make new friends*

Literacy: Does your child

Read all letter-sounds quickly and correctly?*
Read appropriately for their age, including books*
Write the letters for most sounds including trickier sounds like sh, th, ee, ow*
Identify all sounds within a word and make attempts at spelling unfamiliar words?*
Sound out unfamiliar words when reading?*
Read and understand longer texts?*

9 - 10 Years Old

Is your child speaking clearly, without stuttering or difficulty pronouncing any sounds?*
Is your child following instructions and solving problems in Maths?*
Is your child able to read at an age appropriate level and read fluently?*
Is your child able to analyse and explain what they have read?*
Is your child spelling longer words correctly and knows spelling rules?*
Easily maintain social interactions with others their age and readily make new friends*
Is your child writing without any difficulty?*
Write a range of different texts including stories, reports and discussions that are easy to follow and understand*
Understand some sayings and slang words*
Use long and complex sentences and is able to clearly explain the meanings of words*
Understand instructions in the classroom and learn new information easily*
